The Dracut Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to raise money for scholarships for
graduating students of Dracut High School. The Foundation was incorporated in 1959 and today is managed by
a Board of Directors comprised of 26 volunteer members.
Since it’s inception the Dracut Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $1.3 million dollars in scholarships to
over 1304 recipients. The first two scholarships were awarded in 1957 and totaled $350. At the 2008 Dracut
High School Pride Night 41 scholarships were awarded totaling $96,700. A truly amazing legacy of commitment
by the entire Dracut community to the mission of this Foundation.
What We Do....The Dracut Scholarship Foundation has four primary fundraising events which include the Easy
Spirit Freedom Walk for Education Walkathon, the Annual DSF Craft Fair, the $10,000 Cash Give-Away Raffle,
and the Annual Telethon. In addition to these fundraising events a key aspect of the Foundation’s success is
Memorials. Over 28 Memorial Funds exist today with another 5+ close to reaching permanency. The funds from
these accounts are invested and the yearly interest generated is key to annual scholarship funding. To learn more
about Memorial Funds please visit the Memorial section of this site.
While the Dracut Scholarship Foundation is always seeking new and innovative means of fundraising to ensure the
students of Dracut High School have the opportunity to receive assistance with the ever-escalating cost of higher
education - what remains is the mainstay of our fundraising efforts – The Annual Telethon. In 2007 we hosted the
25th Annual Telethon – broadcasting live from Dracut High School March 13-16th.
The Telethon dates back to 1980 and was the brainchild of then Dracut High School Principal – Bruce Hutchins. Mr. Hutchins remains on
the Board today as an Emeritus Director. The Telethon fueled immense financial growth for the Foundation. In 1980, 20 scholarships
were awarded totaling $8000. Just 10 years later – in 1990 – 36 scholarships were awarded totaling $50,000 – a remarkable 80%
increase in the number of scholarships awarded and a 6 fold increase in dollar value. The Telethon remains key to on-going success of
the Dracut Scholarship Foundation. The entire Dracut community continues to rally around this event and we Thank You - the business
community and donors for your continued support.
With over 1264 past recipients it’s sometimes difficult to stay in touch. We encourage everyone to provide current contact information so
that we can keep you abreast of key programs and events geared to our Alumni group – The SHIP (Scholars Helping To Increase
Possibilities) Committee. Please update our database today - send us an email with your name, address, phone, email address and year
of graduation to dracutscholarship@yahoo.com. Please feel free to pass the word to any former classmates, co-workers, friends or
family members who may wish to join our efforts. Every idea counts – every helping hand is welcomed.
As always - we welcome comments and suggestions – please send us an email at dracutscholarship@yahoo.com.
